Reps: Bill to prohibit use, manufacture, importation of plastic bags passes 2nd reading
The House of Representatives on Wednesday, passed through second reading, a bill for an Act to prohibit the use, manufacture and importation of all plastic bags used for commercial and household packaging.
Sponsor of the bill Representative Sergius Ogun from Edo State said the bill when passed into law will go a long way in addressing harmful impacts to oceans, rivers and lakes.
According to him it will also relieve pressure on landfalls, waste management, forests, environment, wildlife as well as human beings.
The lawmaker explained that uncontrolled use of plastic materials (polythene bags) and the arbitrary disposal of same, posed great danger to humanity and even to the environment.
Other lawmakers contributed in favour of the bill.
